Nøkken, also known as the Nixie in English, is a water nymph from Norwegian folklore. It is said to dwell in lakes, swamps and calm rivers, and symbolise the dangers of dark waters.

It is a shapeshifter and has been described to take the shape of a handsome man with a fiddle, a beautiful mermaid creature and a white, shining horse. It takes the shape of what will most easily lure its prey to it, be it for food, revenge or to pass along an omen.
